She sat across from me, frustration written all over her face.
“Dr. King, I don’t understand,” she said. “I’ve got customers. Sales are growing. But it feels like the harder I work, the deeper I sink.”
I asked her what happened.
“The bank saw my turnover and offered me a loan,” she sighed. “It looked like quick money, so I took it. But the repayments are choking me.” She paused, then whispered, “And last month, an investor came in. He offered equity, but at terms that left me with less than half of my company. I signed — because I was desperate.”
I leaned forward and told her.
“Two deals. Two mistakes. And one reason: you don’t have a capital strategy.”
She looked at me, puzzled. 🤔 “Capital isn’t just money,” I explained. “It’s the right money, from the right source, at the right time, for the right purpose. Without a strategy, you’ll keep grabbing whatever looks shiny — and each decision will cost you.”
I told her, “Raising money without a capital strategy is like boarding a danfo without knowing its destination. You’ll get a ride, yes, but you’ll likely end up far from where you intended — or worse, burnt. ”
Her shoulders dropped. “So what should I have done?” she asked quietly.
“Map your capital journey,” I replied. “Know how much you need, why you need it, and when you need it. Match the right type of capital to your growth stage and business model. That way, you stay in control of your vision. ”
Every founder and non-profit leader needs this clarity. Your business needs a capital strategy.
